Dr. Abbey Canon received her BS in animal science and international agriculture (2007) and DVM (2011) from Iowa State University, her MPH from the University of Iowa (2011), and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventative Medicine. Dr. Canon is the Director of Public Health and Communications for the American Association of Swine Veterinarians where she oversees public health issues relevant to swine veterinarians. Previously, Dr. Canon developed training on antibiotic use and resistance, foreign and zoonotic diseases, and biosecurity for the USDA-APHIS National Veterinary Accreditation Program; instructed veterinary and undergraduate students; and conducted outreach focusing on zoonotic disease prevention as a veterinary specialist at the Center for Food Security and Public Health at Iowa State University. Dr. Canon also served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the United States Public Health Service, stationed at the Wisconsin Division of Public Health. As a “disease detective,” she investigated human disease outbreaks of Salmonella, E. coli, and multidrug resistant tuberculosis.
