Nathan E. Stone, Ph.D., is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Northern Arizona University. His research focuses on molecular epidemiology, vector-borne diseases, and the development of high-resolution genomic tools to understand pathogen transmission and inform disease control strategies. Dr. Stone has led projects involving leptospirosis, cattle fever ticks, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and brown dog ticks, with extensive collaborations involving the USDA, CDC, tribal nations, and international partners. He has developed and applied innovative amplicon sequencing (AmpSeq) and targeted DNA capture technologies for culture-independent genomic characterization of pathogens, vectors, and host-associated samples. His work has advanced understanding of pathogen ecology, transmission dynamics, acaricide resistance, and zoonotic disease risk across human, animal, and environmental systems. Dr. Stone currently serves as Secretary of the International Leptospirosis Society Subcommittee on the Taxonomy of Leptospiraceae and leads multiple federally funded research projects.
